The extension provides a longer choke, with a more gradual taper, a longer parallel section towards the muzzle thus leading to fewer flyers and more uniform patterns. Many shooters like the advantage of knowing which choke is in the barrel without removing it by simply noting the markings on the extended portion of the choke tube.
