Calling Legend Paul Butski hunts with NATV

June 1st, 2008 posted by ccobbett | Filed under General |

NATV was lucky this past week to have the privilege of hunting with 6x national and 3x Grand National turkey calling champion Paul Butski. Paul is co-host of Nationally broadcast “Sportsman Outdoor Strategies.”
ff
Paul Butski, S.O.S TV co-host, hunted with the Northwoods Adventures TV team on the last 2 days of the ME Turkey season . The hunt was AWESOME Paul is one of the best Turkey callers we have ever heard in the woods ! Paul had these 3 & 4 year old Toms ( hard ones to harvest) coming in on a string ! Everything went according to plan except Nate didn’t hit record when the moment of truth took place ( hero to ZERO ) all in a matter of seconds. Paul was great to hunt with. We were very proud to have him in hunting camp this season! Paul is a true sportsman and one of the best hunters in the country .

We hope to see Paul and SOS TV co-host Bob Walker back in Maine next year to chase ole tommy boy.

It has been a great season so far. Both my family and my hunting partner Nate’s family tagged out. And we have done well with the few people we have brought out. The birds have been a little testy this season, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. Here are some of the un lucky ones

A Great Weekend at Kittery Trading Post

Well this weekend Nate and I were at Kittery Trading Post (http://www.kitterytradingpost.com/), Northern New England’s largest outdoor retailer. We were there as part of Springfest. This a chance for sportsman to gear up for the upcoming fishing and spring turkey seasons. There were many company representatives and outdoor personalities on hand. Some of the noteables included Chris Parish, Joe Judd, Jim Strelec , Paul Butski and Matt Morrett ( legends in the world of turkey calling).

Nate and I were there to just hang out and socialize. We got a chance to meet with many fans of the Northwoods Adventures TV. This kind of venue is great for us. It gives us a chance to make a real connection with the people that watch the show. It also gives us a chance to meet with other people from the outdoor industry and network. Nate and I are not above a little bribe. So if it takes some fishing and a lobster dinner or two to get these guys in camp….. Well throw anchor and fire up the grill. Watch for some of these guys on future shows.

We capped off the weekend with the NWTF style Turkey calling contest held annually at Kittery Trading Post. For the second straight year, Nate and I were asked to help judge. There were 5 judges in total including the current #2 in the world, Chris Parish. The competition was fierce. The Mens division included several state champions and national level callers. The MC randomly picks the calls and the judging is done blind from behind a screen.

In the Jakes division (16 and under) our hope was that Dylan and Tyler would call just for fun. Last year Tyler took a fourth place and Dylan was not there. This season Tyler was unable to compete due to illness. Dylan practiced all morning and got some pointers from Jim Strelec and Joe Judd. That afternoon, in the most populated division, with a box and push button call, Dylan was able to purr, cluck, and yelp his way to third place. The first, second, and third place winners were only separated by 3 points. The boys both had a good time and Dylan was excited that his little buddy Tyler was there and able to join him in the group photo.

All in all it was a great weekend for Northwoods Adventures TV. We got to meet some great fans, some wonderful people from the industry, and be part of the growth of the sport in Maine. We would like to write a special thanks to Kittery trading Post for this weekend and all the work they do year round for sportsman.

Winter Wonderland

March 14th, 2008 posted by ccobbett | Filed under Adventures This Week, General |

This is from an e-mail I got this morning. Looks like the kids had a blast (no pun intended).
My buddy Orrin and I took our 2 boys out to Peaslee Mountain Hunt Park for a crack at Red Deer and let me tell you, for those who think hunting a fenced area is like tying up and shooting a tame animal, you’ve never been to a REAL hunt park. A certain number of animals are released on 400 acres in the late summer and left to live on their own with no human contact. They get hunted hard from September thru February and the hunts aren’t easy; many folks go home empty handed.

The guide told us there were four does left on the property and trying to hunt that few deer on 400 acres is a huge undertaking, especially when they’re so timid they booger at the sight of a human, just like a whitetail deer. Danny, (the guide), said he didn’t think we would get a shot at one deer, let alone two, with only one day to hunt but we headed out at 7:30am this morning. He dropped me and Ryan off in the woods and took Lance & Orrin about 400 yards away to sit elsewhere and it was bitter cold; 10 degrees above zero with a biting 15 mph wind but the kids shivered through it, backs against trees.

After more than 6 hours and three separate moves to different wooded locations, the does came through, followed by a rogue stag buck and a bull elk. I coaxed Ryan and he had to take a quick shot at the lead doe as she was turning to get out of there, but he took her square in the heart and she was done before she even hit the ground! Shot was 30 yards! Within a minute of Ryan’s shot, the deer bolted down the trail and ran into Lance who dropped a second doe at 60 yards!
ryanlancesreddeer-2.jpg

Field dressed, Ryan’s was 133 and Lances was 152. Incredible hunt to put the kids on during the off season and it was Ryan’s 1st deer! Each set up was in the woods, sitting on snow and/or pine needles; no tree stands and no heated box blinds, and each set was about 2 hours apiece. We spent one night there before the hunt and were treated like kings to a pot roast of delicious elk and boiled veggies, followed by homemade applepie with french vanilla icecream. Breakfast was at 6:00am, being eggs, bacon, toast, coffee & juice. Our hostess packed us lunches and Ryan & I ate sandwiches right in the woods on the ground in 25 degree weather!

Everything was filmed for outdoor tv and we would like to thank Forest Peaslee, Dannie Peaslee, Charly Calpo, and a special thanks to Nate & Chris for giving us the green light to film this! This is not your “run of the mill” hunt park for sure.

Look Who’s Coming to Dinner… Lanny Benoit

Lanny Benoit, of the famed Benoit Brothers, will be making an appearance at the NWTF Hunting Heritage Banquet at the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HALL 47 HIGH STREET in SANFORD. The NWTF. Your County Beards & Spurs along with Northwoods Adventures TV (www.northwoodsoutdoorstv.com) are pleased to bring such a well know icon to our community. Make sure you are there April 12th to see the legend himself.

“The Benoit Brothers (Lanny, Shane and Lane) have over 100 years of combined deer hunting experience. They grew up in Duxbury, Vermont and still live in the central Vermont area. Although all three brothers have full time jobs, they still spend 4-6 weeks every year hunting in Ontario, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Over the years the brothers have taken trophy bucks under all types of conditions. Their “how to” book “Big Bucks the Benoit Way” was published ten years ago and has sold over 40,000 copies. The book provides many tips by Larry (their father), Lanny, Shane and Lane on how to track a trophy buck.” (www.benoitsbigbucks.com)
